      Bequests

Brooks has designed a bequest to Ploughshares Fund that uses easy construction techniques.

Brooks:  It couldn't have been simpler.  I emailed the Ploughshares' bequest language to my attorney.  He sent me an amendment to my will which I signed and sent back, keeping a copy.

His long-range plans, however, are more complex.  He wants his bequest to a help a David-size nonprofit affect the debate between Goliaths on the proliferation of nuclear and chemical weapons.

Brooks:  Ploughshares is unique.  It's a small fund with an outsized ability to influence the course of public policy.  We've seen since 9/11 that we can't naively assume the government has big issues under control.  Good policymaking needs the perspective and independent analysis that only non-governmental organizations can provide.

Brooks became acquainted with Ploughshares Fund through Alastair Mactaggart, a former board member and Bay Area real estate developer, who invited him to hear Ploughshares grantees speak at luncheons in San Francisco.

Brooks:  I found the meetings fascinating.  Then 9/11 happened and the issues they were speaking of took on new urgency.

Brooks joined Ploughshares' board in January 2002.

Brooks:  The nuclear genie is not going back in the bottle.  This issue is not going to go away.  I hope my bequest will help build Ploughshares endowment.  I want to make sure people are working on policy tasks to deal with this issue well into the future.

Ploughshares Fund is honored to list Brooks Walker III as a member of its Nuclear Free Legacy Society.
